WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children helping pregnant, postpartum and breast feeding women, infants and children up to the age of 5 to improve family health with good nutrition:

NEWBORN SERVICES

OTHER CHILD & ADOLESCENT SERVICES

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE CLINIC

A CONFIDENTIAL service for individuals:

  • Who have a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Who suspect they have a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Who may have had contact with an infected person.

The STD clinic offers diagnosis, treatment, education, and condoms to prevent the spread of STD’s.

The Environmental Health Division at East Side Health District is responsible for implementing environmental health programs that protect and educate the public.  These programs involve regulatory inspections, mosquito disease surveillance and public education material.  East Side Health District is responsible for the following environmental health programs:

  • Food Service Establishment operations.
  • Food Safety
  • Summer Food Program
  • Private Sewage System permitting and inspections
  • Water Well permitting, inspections, and   sampling.
  • Mosquito disease surveillance.
  • Vector Control Program   
  • Public Nuisance Investigations
  • Tanning Facility Inspections
  • Illinois Smoke-Free Restaurant Recognition Program.
  • Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response

VITAL RECORDS

Birth and death records are maintained at the District’s 20th Street Administration office.  An official record is maintained of each birth and each death occurring in the District’s service area.

The District provides official certificates of  births & deaths for occurrences in the service area. A fee is charged for this service.  State regulations determine who may obtain a birth or death record. Certificates are available to authorized persons at the 20th Street Administration office.

HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS       


Heart Smart For Teens

Health Educators facilitated the Heart Smart For Teens Programs for 5th -9th grade girls in School District 189 and School District 188.  This 9 week program focuses on the importance of physical activity and good nutrition for heart health.

CATCH

The CATCH curriculum helps students to become physically active and help lead healthier lifestyles.  East Side Health District has 2 certified CATCH trainers to implement curriculum in the schools.

Coordinated School Health

In partnership with School District 189, Mandela Elementary, A.M. Jackson, and Dunbar school, health educators assist the entire school in setting goals based on eight components of school health identified by the Center for Disease control and Prevention.  Funding received from DHS and General Mills.  An annual health festival is held for the community at the participating schools each year.

In partnership with School District 189, Substance Abuse Prevention Programs were offered in 10 and 15 week school curriculums.  A No Alcohol Communication Campaign was targeted to the middle and high school students to address the issue of under age drinking among youth ages 10-17.  The alcohol awareness coalition has recently been added to prevent youth from abusing alcohol.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Program

Illinois Prostate Cancer Communities of Color Initiative 92

The Prostate Cancer Awareness Program, through combined efforts of two grants received, were able to screen over 600 men for elevated PSA levels.  Several education and testing sites were set up throughout the community, such as McDonalds, Senior Citizen Centers, Churches, Schools, East St. Louis City Hall and Outreach Centers.  The men watched a prostate cancer educational presentation and were given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation.  Many other sites were used to disseminate Prostate Cancer information such as Senior Citizens Residential Facilities, Barbershops, Supermarkets and Pharmacies.

Ticket For The Cure

Ticket For The Cure Community Grant Awareness Program 603 Reached

The Ticket for the Cure Community Grant Awareness program strives to reach and educate women in the East St. Louis area over the importance of breast health and early detection.  The program enforces the significance of early detection for the best protection with emphasis on living healthier lifestyles and activities that will increase awareness of breast cancer risk factors.  Over 600 women participated in the program received care for breast health.  Education sites were set up at Outreach Centers, Women Shelters, Community Centers, Women’s Clothing Stores, Churches, East Saint Louis City Hall, and other places women frequently visit.
